Man, 70, held in wife’s death
Truck hits woman, barber shop
An elderly Colorado Springs woman died and her husband was arrested after the man allegedly slammed his pickup truck
into the woman, ran over her and crashed into a barber shop Tuesday at Peterson Air Force Base.
Teresa Gibbs, 70, died at Memorial Hospital about three hours after the 2:40 p.m. incident.
William Gibbs, also 70, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, said Colorado Springs Police Lieutenant Joe
Kenda. Gibbs, who suffered a broken collarbone, was under guard at Memorial Hospital on Tuesday night where he was
being held for observation, Kenda said.
According to Kenda, the couple was driving through the parking lot of the base commissary about 2:30 p.m. when
bystanders said they overheard the couple arguing loudly. Teresa Gibbs, who was driving, abruptly stopped the truck and got
out. As she walked around the front of the truck, William Gibbs slid across the front seat, threw the truck into gear and
accelerated, police said.
The truck rammed into the woman, tossing her onto the hood and into the windshield, witnesses told police. The driver then
slammed on the brakes, throwing the woman onto the asphalt in front of the truck.
Again the driver accelerated running over the woman and continuing several hundred feet before crashing into a support
beam in front of a base barber shop.
Five people inside the shop suffered minor injuries when pieces of the truck, pole and shattered window flew into the shop.
All were treated on the base.
“I heard the crash. Things started flying, and I ducked,” said George Francis, who was reading a magazine inside the shop
and suffered a cut on his back.
The Gibbs were married 41 years ago in Colorado Springs. He is retired from the military and she was a homemaker.
The couple’s neighbors expressed disbelief the incident could have been intentional saying the two seemed to be nice and
caring to neighbors and one another.
Jody Trail, who has lived in the same block as the Gibbs for nine years, said they are gently and caring people.
“He’s really good to her,” she said, adding that when Teresa Gibbs required hospital treatments for an ailment recently, “he
was with her all the time.”
She said the Gibbs “have been married, like, forever. He’s always mild-mannered, sweet and nice.”
“He watches out for all the kids in the neighborhood and we can always go over there and borrow something. They’re so
laid back and really pretty devoted to one another. He always talked highly of her.”
Trail also said William Gibbs sometimes brought her zucchini from his garden, where he grows an assortment of vegetables
and “all kinds of flowers.”
Trail and Teresa Gibbs was not as active as her husband, but she walked every day and visited with neighbors. William
Gibbs recently had triple by-pass surgery, she said.
Another neighbor who refused to give her name said William Gibbs “was always friendly to us. I’ve never heard any fighting
coming from them. They seemed like nice people to me.”
The fire department responded to the Gibbs’ home about 4:30 p.m. and put out a burning mattress. The fire probably
started from a cigarette left burning when the Gibbs’ two sons rushed to the hospital after hearing about the accident, a family
friend said.
