A memorial service will be held for Frank E. Younker, 78, of Coos Bay, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Coquille Tribe's Community Center, 600 Miluk Drive in Coos Bay. A reception will follow. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Park in Coos Bay.

Frank E. Younker was born March 10, 1930, in Coos Bay and loved the area so much, he never considered leaving. Frank, dad, grandfather, uncle, cousin, brother and friend died Jan. 1, 2009, in Myrtle Creek, at his son's home, surrounded by his family.

He graduated from North Bend High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Navy until 1955. Once out of the military, he worked in the area's logging industry before becoming a longshoreman in ILWU local 12, a job he did with pride for 27 years.

A hard worker, he was an even better dad, husband, relative and friend. He loved to hunt and fish and was darn good at both. As a member of the Coquille Indian Tribe, his Indian name was "Ponto," which translates to slow and easy. Behind his calm demeanor was a brilliant mind. Always respectful of others, he was quick to forgive and was steadfast in his ability to look for and find the good in people. He was generous and kind, and over and over, people would tell his family, "Your dad is the nicest person I've ever met."

He also had a great sense of humor, and as his family wrote this, they chuckled at how much he would enjoy the following line: Frank is preceded in death by all those who died before him and is survived by all of those people still lucky enough to be alive. If you were fortunate enough to experience his sense of humor or be on the receiving end of one of his good deeds or shiny compliments, please take a moment to reflect on the joy that he brought to you and then spread some of that Frank-ness around to those you come across in your life.

Frank is survived by his two sisters, Blanche Doyle and Beth Scott; two brothers, Tom Younker and Bob Younker; his son, Tom and daughters, Chris and Julie, who had a special place in his heart and are the children from his 53-year marriage to JoAnne Younker; and grandkids he greatly loved, Seylor, Natalie, Bo and Jason. The rest of his close and adoring family is far too large to list and his friends count even greater in numbers.

The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of one's choice or the Kilkitch Youth Canoe Club, P.O. Box 783, North Bend, OR 97459.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary, 267-4216.
