William H. Yates

William H. “Jabo” Yates, 76, a Eupora businessman and community leader, died of cancer on Wednesday, September 29 at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 1 at First Baptist Church in Eupora with burial in Eupora City Cemetery. Oliver Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Yates, a Shelby native, moved to Eupora after his service in the Army Air Corps in World War II. For the past 47 years, he was active in the economic development of Webster County. With his son, he owned and operated Yates Home Center Building and Supply. He was a deacon and past chairman of the deacons at First Baptist Church in Eupora. He was general secretary for the Sunday school and an usher for more than 30 years.

He was a charter member of the board of directors of the Bank of Webster County and remained after it merged with Deposit Guaranty National Bank. He helped organize White’s Creek Development Project and served as president of W. C. Developers Inc. He was a longtime member of the Eupora Rotary Club, serving on its board of directors. He helped develop health-care services, serving on the Webster General Hospital board for 24 years, the last 18 as chairman.

Survivors include: wife, Marie; son, Bill Yates of Eupora; daughter, Becky Yates of Jackson; brothers, Jack Brooks Yates of Lexington and Gene A. Yates of Jackson; sister, Mary Elizabeth Hooker of Lexington; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the building fund of the First Baptist Church of Eupora.
