Was converted during the war when he was 16 years of age, joined the Missionary Baptist church at a very young age and was ordained and began preaching when less than 20 years old, and has been actively engaged in the service of the Master for 86 years; He was a Confederate soldier and saw active service during the last two years of the war. He was married to Miss Catherine Harlow in July 1867. To this union were born 11 children, five boys and six girls of whom eight are living but two of whom were present at their father's funeral. J. C. Phipps was a prominent farmer of this county on whose farm the deceased was living when he died, and Mrs. Ola Bristow of Wichita Falls, Texas. Besides the eight children who are living his aged wife survives him. Grandma Phipps is 73 years of, yet she is very active for one who is well past the three score and ten mark. Grandpa Phipps was a great student of the bible, well versed in its teachings and it is said by those who have known him for a half century that he tried to follow the teachings of the book he loved so well. Funeral services were held at the Wellington Cemetery by his life long friend, Rev. R. C. Wright of Wellington, who paid a beautiful tribute to the sterling Christian life of his boyhood friend, it being agreed between the two some seven years ago that which ever died first the other would preach the funeral.
