ADELAIDE MARIE SCANNELL Passed away peacefully in Alameda, CA, September 14, 2005 at the age of 85. Born in Patterson, CA on March 20, 1920, daughter of the late Manuel and Izabel Mattos. At the age of 20, she moved to Alameda with her husband Jim. The State of California Employment Office employed her until she retired in 1983. Adelaide had a love for life, enjoyed traveling, sewing, A's games, a good party, gardening, an avid Bridge player, and ex-member of the Alameda Hospitality Club. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, James T. Scannell, their infant son baby Scannell, sister Marie Azevedo and her husband Ed, brothers Joe, Johnny and infant baby Mattos, sister-in-law Kay Coustier and many dear friends, especially Gladys Latshaw. She is survived by her daughters Linda Shinnefield, Charlene Scannell, her grandson Jeff Martin, brothers Mike and George Mattos, sister-in-law Shirley Mattos, brother-in-law Al Coustier, dear friend Jim Thompson and many nephews and nieces. She was a fighter to the end, and gave a true meaning to the words commitment, dedication and unconditional love. She was a very kind, loving and generous person who loved many people and was in turn loved by many. She will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved her. Visitation will be held at Greer Family Mortuary, 2694 Blanding Ave., Alameda, CA., Saturday, September 17, 2005 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., plus a 4:00 p.m. Rosary and visitation will be on Sunday, September 18, 2005 3-5 p.m. A Funeral Mass to be held at St. Joseph's Basilica, 1109 Chestnut St., Alameda, on Monday, September 19, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow to Patterson Cemetery, 10800 Hwy 33, Patterson, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Adelaide's name to the American Cancer Society, 1700 Webster Street, Oakland, CA 94612 or to St. Joseph's Basilica.
