Barbara (Mrs. Alfred) Habegger, 85, died Sunday in Garden City of injuries sustained in an auto accident Aug. 5 near the Kansas-Colorado border. Born Barbara Hirschy at Berne, Ind., she was married in 1913 to Alfred Habegger and became the first married woman to graduate from Bethel College. They served together for 39 years as missionaries to the Northern Cheyenne Indians in Montana under the General Conference Mennonite Church until his death in 1956 after which she continued to work in Montana for another year. She retired to North Newton where the Bethel College Mennonite Church was nearly filled Monday night for a memorial service to her. The funeral was held Wednesday in the White River Cheyenne Mennonite Church, Busby, Mont., with Joe Walksalong and Malcolm Wenger in charge. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Marden of Reedley, Calif. and Dr. David of Wichita; four daughters, Jeanne Boehr of Omaha, Neb.; Helen (Mrs. J. Herbert) Fretz of Goshen, Ind., Esther (Mrs. Paul) Sauder of Northridge, Calif., and Lois Habegger of Newton; a brother, Gilbert Hirschy of Berne, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Dora Winteregg of Berne; 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
