Bethel [Hebrew for "house of God"] was established by Prussian-born leader and pastor Wilhelm Keil as a Christian self-sufficient society. At its zenith in 1855, Bethel was home to 650 people who owned and worked 4,000 acres. [There is information on the internet regarding Keil, the Bethel Society, and the Aurora Society founded in Oregon. Wilhelm Keil's memorial #17931036]

Obituary: [from one of the Shelbina papers]
"Andrew Grossman died at his home in this city and was buried at Zion cemetery February 2 1918. Mr. Grossman had been in poor health for some years and death came to him as a happy relief. He was 82 years old and had spent the greater part of his life here in Bethel. Reverend C.F. Stecher of Camp Point Illinois was requested by him before his death to preach his funeral which the Reverend did in a well chosen sermon."
