Jan. 19, 1921 — Oct. 14, 2007
Iris Lillian Woods of John Day died Oct. 14, 2007, in Prairie City at Blue Mountain Nursing Home. She was 86.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 27, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in John Day. Interment will be at the Canyon City Cemetery. Pastor Dan Benson will officiate.

Mrs. Woods was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Silvies Valley to Ellsworth and Maud (Beavers) Hopper. She graduated with honors and was the salutatorian of her graduating class in 1939. On April 13, 1944, she married Willis Woods at the United Methodist Church in Boise, Idaho.

She worked for Doctor Fey out of high school, then worked for El Knox Company and Grant County Clerk's Office. In June 1968, she began working for US Bank and retired in 1984. She kept the books for Valley Sanitation, which she and her husband owned.

She was president and secretary for the Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Can Day Garden Club, and started the Reach for Recovery Program for Cancer Society in Grant County. She also worked and ran the Methodist thrift shop for years. She was affiliated with the American Legion Auxiliary # 77 and the United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Woods had many hobbies. She enjoyed working in her yard, ceramics, sewing, traveling, reading and rock hunting. She also enjoyed the thrift shop at the Methodist Church.

Mrs. Woods is survived by her daughter, Jeanne, and her husband, Chet Day, of John Day; son, Wayne, and his wife, Margaret Woods, of Beaverton; foster son, Larry, and his wife, Mae Armstrong, of Mt. Vernon; brother, Darrell Hopper, of John Day; sister-in-law, Lou Woods, of Burns; six grandchildren, Tina and Benji Lippert, of John Day; Angie and Andy Moore, of Salem; stepgrandson, Brian and Schabahn Day, of Seattle, Wash.; Willis Wayne III of Seattle, Wash.; Eleanore Woods of Beaverton; and Hanna Rose of Beaverton; nine great-grandchildren, Dennis, Dustin, Dakota, Darien, Gabryel, Braeden, Eujenie Joyce (Joy), Dani and Jonah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceeded in death by her husband of 59 years, Willis Woods; son, John L. Woods; her parents; two sisters; one brother; and brothers- and sister-in-law.
