Melvin Andrew Medeiros was the first-born son of Seraphim (Joe) Medeiros and Felisa (Alice) Silvan Hernandez Medeiros. His parents were Portuguese and Spanish immigrants and he had one younger brother, Jerome, who lived until 2006.

Melvin enlisted August 27, 1943 in San Francisco and was mustered into the US Army on March 19, 1944 onto the GENERAL J.R.BROOKE/AP-132 transport headed to the Pacific venue during World War II. He was killed in the action that took place in the Philippines, where the United States pushed Japan out of the island and took over the occupation with the Battle of Manila.
