Beth C. Gardner of John Day died on April 8, 2007. She was 79.

Ms. Gardner was born on Nov. 6, 1927, in Dinwiddie County, Va., to James and Mary (Cliborne) Cifers. She was the fifth of nine children.

The family moved to North Carolina when she was a year old. She received her education in North Carolina, graduating from Stovall High School in 1945.

In 1948, she graduated from nursing school in Baltimore, Md. She was employed by various hospitals before moving to California in 1963. She furthered her education in nursing and graduated from Sacramento City College in 1967. She retired from nursing in the early 90s and moved to John Day in 2002.

Ms. Gardner loved spending time with her family, often taking her grandchildren on picnics and various other outings. She also enjoyed fishing, reading and crafts.

She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Schultz, and her husband, Darrell Schultz, of John Day; granddaughters, Sherri Dominici, and husband, Steve, of California; Christi DeHaven and husband, Les, of John Day; grandson, Ray Wenger and wife, Tanni, of Prairie City; great-grandchildren, Bria and Dominic DeHaven; Sami and Sierra Dominici; and Averie and Lauren Wenger; one brother, Lawrence G. Cifers, of Oxford, N.C.; and one sister, Josephine Flaning of Stanford, Conn.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, her parents, two sisters and four brothers. (Blue Mountain Eagle newspaper, John Day, Oregon)
