Katherine Zachry Rogers

HENRIETTA, Texas — Katherine Zachry Rogers, 92, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, in Dallas, Texas.

On Friday, January 30, 2009, a reception at 12:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 1308 W. Omega (Hwy 82) Henrietta, Texas, 76365, will precede a funeral service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Howard Walker, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Hope Cemetery in Henrietta under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.

Katherine was born on the windswept plains near Happy, Texas, on January 10, 1917, the daughter of Henry Clement and Dora Lea (Frey) Zachry. When she was seven, the family returned to Clay County where she was reared in farming communities along the Red River. The hard times of the Great Depression were easily offset by the large, loving and hardworking Zachry family. She attended high school in Henrietta, Texas, and, due to the distance to the family ranch, lived in town with her beloved grandmother, Lydia Slack Frey, an early pioneer of Clay County. She enjoyed these wonderful days as a popular, scholarly and athletic student.

After high school, she attended Draughn Business College and then found work in the bustling city of Wichita Falls. The petroleum industry was big business and it was not long before she met and married her love of a lifetime, Jesse A. Rogers, a young Texaco geologist from Houston. The first of many transfers sent them to Pampa, Texas, where Jesse Jr. was born. Soon, the War Years found her traveling the country by train with Jr. in tow, following her Naval Officer husband when and where she could. While he served in Alaska, her daughter Susie was born at Sheppard Air Force Base. After the war, the family was transferred to Midland, Texas, where Robert was born.

Subsequent relocations with Texaco took the family to Fort Worth, Houston, New Orleans and New York. Her dear disabled son, John, was born in Fort Worth. Tragically, her husband Jesse died very prematurely while they were in New York. She returned to Texas and saw her children through college and into their own careers. Along the way, she cultivated many friends and admirers. Bridge was her passion and she played in many tournaments. She knew and trusted in the good, loving and all knowing God. She was a loving, cheerful, caring and courageous lady who will be always remembered as a great Mom and a better friend.

She is survived by four children, son and daughter-in-law, Jesse & Sandy Rogers, daughter and son-in-law, Susie & Ben Soderquist, son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. and Lucy Rogers, son, John C. Rogers; and eight grandchildren, Sherry Payton, Stacey Lanius and her husband, John, Greg Rogers and his wife Christy, Trey Finnell and his wife Mary, Katie Soderquist, Kate Rogers, Melanie Rogers, Robert G. Rogers; and seven great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Ben Payton, Chris, David, and Emily Lanius, Scarlett Finnell, and Luke Rogers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Volunteer Services Council, Denton State School, P.O. Box 368, Denton, Texas, 76202-0368.
