Sylvester Murphy Webster was born to John and Sarah (Maitland) Webster in West Middlesex, PA and died in Harrisville, PA at the age of 71. "He was the last of a family of 17 children" (according to his obituary).

He was a coal miner by trade, and married Sarah M Hawke on Christmas day in 1866. Together they had nine children and lived their entire lives in and around the Butler/Mercer County areas.

Sylvester was injured in the mine and began making pick axes for them. He was also a twin to a brother named Lochester.
