On 20 Mar 1862 he enlisted in Union County, NC as a private in Co. I, 48th regiment, NC State Troops. He was wounded at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 Sep 1862. He was furloughed for 30 days on 6 Oct 1862. He reported present in Jan-June 1863, Mar-Apr1864, and Sep- Oct 1864.

Also, Lewis and Permelia kept their nephews John Ellis Williams and Henry Marshall Williams after their parents died. The boys are listed with them on the 1870 census. The boys' father was Ervin Williams, Lewis's half brother.
