He was born on May 31st, 1946 in Berea, Kentucky; the son of the late C. B. Owens and Barbara Owens. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Irvine where he served as an Elder and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was a 1968 graduate of Berea College; he received his Jurist Doctorate degree from the University of Kentucky School of Law in 1972. A past Master of the Irvine Masonic Lodge, a member of the Eastern Star, and American Legion. Philip was chairman of the Estill Arts Council and a past president of Powell County Lions Club. During his 36 Years of practicing law, he served on various other councils and organizations. His hobbies and interest were woodworking and farming.
Those left to cherish his memory included his wife of 40 years, Virginia P. "Ginny" Owens of Irvine, Kentucky; two sons, Thomas Byron Owens of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Philip Daniel Owens (Tracey) of Irvine, Kentucky; two granddaughters, Brianna and Brooklyn and two brothers, Byron M. Owens (Peggy) of Somerset, Kentucky; J. Stephen Owens (Onna Kay) of Brodhead, Kentucky; as well as a nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, January 31st, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Irvine First Christian Church in Irvine, Kentucky; with Bro. Tom Henderson officiating. The Marvin E. Owens Home for Funerals of Brodhead, Kentucky was entrusted with the arrangements.
