Beloved Woman Dies in Hoboken
Nahunta, Ga., July 24, 1936. Mrs. Marthentha Warren Thomas, 76, widely known and beloved South Georgia pioneer who moved to this section as a young girl, soon after the war between the States, died last Thursday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. L. Dowling at Hoboken, after an illness ofseveral weeks. She had been in declining health for several years.
Her death removes a beloved Christian character whose South Georgia family connections are numerous, and whose friends and admirers are legion. She was born in Emanuel County, January 31, 1860, the daughter of John L. and Wealthy Woodward Warren, early settlers of that section.
She was for many years a devout member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church near Waycross, and possessed many lovable and admirable traits of character that stamped her as a leader in the religious and social life of this section.
She was the widow of the late Calvin Thomas of Brantley County, since whose death she had lived in Waycross and Jacksonville and in Brantley.
The immediate survivors include two sons, Preston Thomas of Waycross, and 0. R. Thomas of Jacksonville, also a daughter, Mrs. W. L. Dowling of Hoboken and four grandchildren. There are a number of nieces and nephews and other kinsmen throughout this section of Georgia. Mr. Fred Dowling, prominent business man of this city is a grandson of the deceased.
The services were conducted by Elder Lester Cole. Pallbearers were E. B. Newton, J. H. Sikes, L. C. Colvin, R. L. McLeod, Dempsey Strickland, and R. R. Kelly.
The deceased is survived by the following grandchildren: J. E. Evelyn and Mildred Thomas, Jacksonville, Fla.'; Dorothy, P. E. and Carswell Thomas, Waycross; T. F. Dowling Nahunta; W. E. Dowling, Douglas; Deloris, Beatrice, Valeria, Vernon, Perry, Calvin, and Betty Ann Dowling, Hoboken.
