On William's military record he lists his birthplace as Cocke Co Tn., while the Cocke Co census lists South Carolina.

A Cosby farmer,William, at age 27, joined the Union Forces, the Civil War, at Lexington, Ky.,Nov. 1863. He is recorded as standing 5'10" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He was a Corporal in Company "A" 2nd Regiment East Tennessee Cavalary.He entered as a Pvt and was discharged as a Corpl.* He fought in the "Battle of Stone River"(a short distance from Nashville,Tn.) and was in the Lebanon,Tn hospital in 1864. He was discharged from the service 7-6-1865, at Nashville, Tn. In 1979 a military marker was placed at his grave. Gravesite was identified by Charlie Gunter of Cosby.
William filed Civil War pension papers listing his surviving children under age 16, with birthdates and stating that Luiza Emeline Ramsey, a sister of his first wife, Sarah Rollins, was a member of his household.
William and Mary Barnett were married by Asbury Fowler 2-16-1881. License issued 2-15-1881. Witnessed by Robert Valentine.

Gravesite Details

Family lore has it that Wm is buried between both his wives, Sarah Rollins and Mary Barnett. There is stones (rocks) on each side of him but no defining markers.
