Thomas was adoped by his uncle, William Spencer, at four years of age. William's will directed that Thomas was to have his loom and tacklin, two steers, and directed him to be clothed as well as his own children, and gave him 20 shillings.

His will dated February 24, 1728/9 mentions his wife Susannah; sons Jabez, Thomas (the eldest), Joseph, Abraham; daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, Susannah, Thankful, Sarah & Eunice; the children of his two deceased daughters, Elizabeth & Susannah: Elizabeth Lester and Susannah Smith
