He was also the father of Lt. Grimke Rhett who died in battle in the Civil War in 1862. Obit for Grimke in the Charleston Mercury dated July 11, 1862.

Found in death notices i the Fairfield Herald issue 18 Jul 1866:
B. S. Rhett, of Charleston, was murdered in Charleston.

An extensive report on the inquest into B. S. Rhett's death appeared in the Charleston [SC] Daily News of 12 July 1866, on page 5. He was killed by a shotgun which discharged when two black men were struggling over it, one man having told the other to shoot Rhett. The inquest found that he was murdered by both men. The Library of Congress has the newspaper on its website.
