Businessman & Plantation Owner
A plantation owner, Josiah Baird was born in Rowan County, NC. He was a shrewd, close manager and became very wealthy; a large portion of his money was made by ginning cotton. He married Mary HOLMES in 1798 in Rowan County, North Carolina. He entered the matrimonial state when only sixteen years of age, and entirely without capital. He immigrated to Smith County in 1803, when the country was almost a wilderness, and filled with wild animals. He and his wife made their own clothing. Their shoes were often made from skins of the beast with which the woods abounded. A receipt for payment of Josiah Baird's coffin was dated as being paid in November, 1861.

Children of Josiah and Mary Holmes Baird:
Reuben, born 1802, Smith County
*Hannah, born 1805, married David Prowell
Mary Baird, born 1810 Smith County
Josiah Baird Jr., Born 1818
Jesse H. Baird, Born 1823
Jerimiah, Susan Baird, and
Sarah Baird Garrison--dead by Feb 22, 1873 as proven in legal documents.
