Polly was the daughter of Wettenhall Warner and Elizabeth Cargill Warner who moved from Virginia to the Orangeburg District of SC near Charleston, probably when she was quite young. Her father was an immigrant from Ireland. Her maternal grandfather, John Cargill, is believed to have helped survey the state line that divides North and South Carolina. Though it is often assumed her first name was Mary (since Polly is a nickname for Mary), that may not be true in her case. A family Bible lists a sister named Mary, so it is doubtful two daughters would have been named Mary because both lived to adulthood.

Polly met William "Billy" Cornelius Cooper in SC and they were married in November, 1801. After beginning their family in the Orangeburg District of SC, they moved for a short time to the Laurens District of SC, and then on to Haywood County, NC. About 1838 or 1839, they moved to what was Cherokee County, but is now Graham County, NC. She was a widow for 32 years after Billy died. She is buried in an unidentified grave atop this hill. A monument with her name and fourteen other early settlers was erected here years ago to commemorate their lives, since none of the original gravestones are legible.
