My GGG Grandmother Nancy Kellum Calvery and her husband raised at least three of her brother’s (Abel Kellum) children after Abel died in The War Between the States of smallpox as a POW in 1863 in Tippah County. He was married to Polly Ann Essary who was born in 1835 and died after 1859. The three known children are Sarah, Mary and Thomas A. Kellum. Thomas took the Calvery name, and I’m researching still on the other children.

Abel Kellum was born in Alabama in 1824 and died of smallpox on 7 Sep 1863 after being taken as a Prisoner of War in Tippah County, Mississippi. Unfortunately, he was apparently buried in the aggressor’s soil in Illinois, far from his beloved home in Mississippi.

Kellum, Abel PVT,
Co. F, 26th Mississippi Infantry
Captured; 06/04/63, Tippah Co., Mississippi
d. 09/07/63
Small Pox
