Lois was the youngest of thirteen children born to E. B. Lasseter and Annie Bell Rhodes. Soon after Lois was born, the Lasseters removed from Early County, Georgia to Bartow, Florida.

Lois married Edwin Connery Hightower, Jr. on April 16, 1949 at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. They had four children; one son Randy died as a toddler while the family was living in Austria.

Lois and Connery were last living in Orlando, Florida. Her parents and most of her siblings are also buried at Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow.
