David Apple was born Oct. 14, 1838 in North Carolina to parents Thomas Apple (1805-1877) and Margaret “Peggy” Brown (1805-1881). His known siblings include 3 other brothers who also served in Co. A, 38TH IND INF: Mary Polly (b. 1829), Ruth Jane (1830-1894), George Swift (1831-1862; Co. A, 38TH IND INF), Nancy Ann (1833-1914), Elvira E. (1834-1863), Sarah Adaline (1836-1904), Eli Patterson (1840-1916), Moses W. (1841-1920; Co. A, 38TH IND INF), Joseph (1843-1861; Co. A, 38TH IND INF), Samuel Bell (1846-1915), and Monroe (1848-1923). David was also a cousin to John Wesley Apple (1831-1896; Co. A, 38TH IND INF) and Bingham I. Apple (1844-1919; Co. A, 38TH IND INF). The 1860 U.S. Census showed David, his wife Emily C. Allegre, and their son Orville P. (1859-1931) as Greenfield Twp., Orange Co. neighbors of Jefferson McCabe (1831-1863), who also served in Co. A, 38TH IND INF.

David died at “Hospital No. 1” in Shelbyville, TN of peritonitis on June 20, 1862 after a little more than eight months in the army. His remains were were either brought or shipped home to be buried in Apple Chapel Cemetery, Orange Co., IN. His wife Emily applied for a widow’s pension on Sept. 30, 1862 (app. #3,373; cert. #32,769 - Indiana). An “S. Allegre” (likely Shadrach Allegre, Emily’s father) applied for a minor guardian pension, presumably for young Orville, on May 22, 1868 (app. #161,134; cert. #114,549). Emily (Sept. 20, 1839 – Oct. 22, 1901) eventually remarried to James W. Henderson of Orange Co., IN. She is buried in Old Union Cemetery in Orleans, Orange Co., IN.
