NEWS ARTICLE Iron River Reporter Jan 28 1960 "Ray J. Tegge Ends 40 Years As Garageman"

Ray J. Tegge, dean of Iron county car dealers and garage owners, today announced the sale of his building at 411-415 W Adams street to OK Auto Parts, Inc. of Ironwood.

Tegge is retiring from the garage business after 40 years, and he said that General Motors Corp. will soon announce appointment of a successor to him as local dealer in Buick, Pontiac and GMC Trucks.

Tegge will devote his full attention now to management of his 3,500 acres of timber lands and tree farm acreage scattered in Iron River, Hematite, Bates and Stambaugh townships.

A native of Two Rivers, Wis., Tegge served in the US Army with Gen. John J. Pershing on the Mexican border and came to Iron River after that hitch in 1917, enlisting then in the army for service during World War I.

When he was discharged at war's end, he returned to Iron River and opened his garage on January 19, 1920, beginning his career as a motor dealer for Buick cars. Later he sold Chevrolet and Willys cars but dropped them and took on the Pontiac cars and GMC trucks in 1934.

SELECTIVE CUTS He bought his first timber lands in 1921, visioning timber management as a hobby during his active years as a car dealer and garage owner, and as a field of activity after retirement from business in cars and trucks.

One stand of timber near Winslow lake has been cut by Tegge selectively twice during the 40 years of his logging, and the second cut produced even greater volume and better quality than the first cut.

He plans to do tree planting and timber stand improvement in cooperation with state and federal foresters on his lands in the years ahead.

Presently, Tegge is busy inventorying his supply of parts and accessories which are to be shipped back to General Motors Corporation.

OK Auto Parts is a large concern which has branches in Marquette, Menominee, Iron Mountain, Ashland and Rhinelander, and main offices in Ironwood. OK Auto Parts will take over occupancy of the Tegge garage and its adjacent used car lot as soon as Tegge vacates the premises.
