Edna Reed Clayton Dewees was born to Harry and Esther Edith Reed on Sept. 5, 1921, in Gloster, Miss. After a long battle with Alzheimer's, Edna passed away in her sleep on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009. Edna was a true pioneer and had the distinction of being the first woman elected sheriff in the state of Texas. She moved to Texas at the age of one year with her parents. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in Breckenridge, Texas. Edna had a long public service career, in addition to raising five children on a ranch in Loving County, Texas. Being first employed as a Deputy District Clerk in Stephens County, she went on to employment during World War II as an Engine Lathe Operator with Vultee Air Craft Corporation in Fort Worth, Texas. She was then employed by the Special Services Office at the Pecos Army Airfield in Pecos, Texas. In 1945, she was elected Sheriff of Loving County, Texas, and later served as County and District Clerk of Loving County until her retirement in 1986, after 28 years of service. Edna was known for her generous nature. She was responsible for putting the first eyeglasses on almost every child in the Loving County School District for many years and always made certain that anyone from Loving County had the proper clothing and shoes for any special occasion they attended. She is survived by four daughters, Jeri Ann Blair of Del Rio, Texas, Judy London of Gainesville, Texas, Cheryl Clayton Fletcher of San Angelo, Texas, and Susie Joiner Pustejovsky of Kaufman, Texas. She is also survived by one sister, Betty Reed Golman, of Seminole, Texas, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands, George Calvin Clayton and Lawrence Dewees; and one son, Jim Calvin Clayton. Edna is to be laid to rest in Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Pecos, Texas. Her grandsons, Steve Blair, Jay London, Brody Cagle, Ryan Joiner, Tyler Joiner, and Chad Joiner will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer is her great-grandson, Seth Cypert. Funeral services are pending with Pecos Funeral Home in Pecos, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Loving County Historical Commission in Mentone, Texas, or the West of the Pecos Museum in Pecos, Texas.
