Roman Military Leader. He was born in 16 BC, and educated in Rome. He was a favourite of the Emperor Augustus, who considered him a potential successor. Augustus later decided in favour of his stepson, Tiberius, but compelled him to adopt Germanicus as his son and heir. It is recorded that he was an excellent soldier and military leader, and popular with his legions. He fought campaigns in Pannonia and Dalmatia, before being appointed consul in 12 AD. When Augustus died in 14 AD, he was appointed commander of the legions in Germany. Soon afterwards, rebel soldiers declared him Emperor in Tiberius' place. He put down the rebellion, and secured his troops' loyalty to Tiberius. He then led them on a devastating raid against the Marsi tribe of the Ruhr River. Over the next two years, he led his legions into Germany against the rebel leader Arminius. Most of the Germans fled into the forest rather than fight, but the raids succeeded in breaking up the rebel alliance. In 16 AD he met Arminius' army at the Battle of the Weser River, and inflicted huge casualties on the Germans. He was then recalled to Rome and given the honour of a Triumph. In 18 AD he was sent to Asia, where he added the kingdoms of Cappadocia and Commagene to the Roman Empire. He died suddenly in Antioch in 19 AD. Tiberius was suspected of having him killed out of fear of his popularity. His death caused much grief in Rome and there was much public mourning. After his death, arches were built in his honour throughout the Empire.
