Caroline Weir Bennett, 97, died Friday, January 23, 2009, at her home in Starkville, MS.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church in Starkville, MS, followed immediately by the funeral service at 11 a.m. in the church's sanctuary, with the Rev. Olin McBride officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Mizpah Cemetery in Durant, MS.
The daughter of the late Horace and Cordie Hooper Weir, Mrs. Bennett was born in Durant, MS on November 28, 1911.
She also was preceded in death by her husband, A. G. Bennett, Sr.; son, Capt. Robert H. Bennett; sister, Alma Weir Seawright and husband, Kenneth; and nephew Lt. Kenneth Seawright; and great-nephew, Blake Morris.
She was a devoted member and elder emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church in Starkville and a past president of the local and St. Andrew Presbytery Presbyterian Women. A strong supporter of education and history, Mrs. Bennett was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Oktibbeha County Historical and Genealogical Society, and the Mississippi Genealogical Society, and she served as chair of the Oktibbeha Heritage Museum. For many decades, she also enjoyed the Audubon Society, the MSU Women's Club, and the State University Homemakers Club. In 1998, she received the Belhaven College Alumna of the Year Award.
She is survived by her son, George Bennett, Jr. and wife, Sara Ann of Starkville; daughter, Alma Bennett of Clemson, SC; granddaughter, Laurie Bennett Johnson and husband, Chip of Hernando, MS; grandson, Robert Bennett and wife, Lisa; great-granddaughter, Sara Harper Bennett of Atlanta, GA; nieces, Cordelia Seawright Bealor and husband, Jesse of Lynn Haven, FL, Jessi Seawright Ogburn and husband, Joe of Shelby, NC and Raye Bennett Morris of Plainview, TX; and great-nephew, Kenneth Seawright and wife, Phyllis of Jackson, MS, as well as cousins and great-great nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Palmer Home for Children, Columbus, MS; French Camp Academy, French Camp, MS; or a charity of choice.
