Merrill M. Lambeth, a World War II veteran, who fought the Japanese in the Aleutian Islands, died Thursday, Aug. 18. He was 85.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at Canyon City Cemetery with his grandson, Greg Roberts, officiating.

Lambeth was born Sept. 29, 1919, in May, Idaho, to Dave and Carissa (Mann) Lambeth. He stopped attending school in the third grade but always said he learned something every day. He worked as a rancher, farmer, miner, electrician and mechanic. When he retired a number of years ago, he was a machinist at San Juan Lumber Company in John Day.

He married Mary Reynolds on March 1, 1950, in Reno, Nevada.

Lambeth is survived by his wife, Mary Lambeth of John Day; three sons, Jerry Lambeth and Ron Lambeth of John Day, and Robert Lambeth of Klawock, Alaska; three daughters, Jean Wennstrom of Grangeville, Idaho, Sharon Lambeth of Stewart, Fla., and Wanda Dorsey of Canyon City; three brothers, Gaylord Lambeth of John Day, Carrol Lambeth of Moab, Utah, and Bill Lambeth of New Acres, Idaho; four sisters, Helen Parrot of Good Hills, Idaho, Dee Green and Geri Gentry of Wendell, Idaho, and Charlotte Lambeth of Kan.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mabel and Lola.
