Wendell G. Darnold, 77, of Odell, died on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln. He was born on Dec. 7, 1930, in Independence, Kan., grew up in the Wymore area, and graduated from Wymore High School.

He served for 20 years in the United States Navy Submarine Service, where he was stationed in Korea, Vietnam, and during the Cold War, retiring as Chief Petty Officer in 1967. He was married to Jolene Anderson on June 27, 1954, at the Wymore Methodist Church. They lived in Connecticut, where he owned and operated Jodar Blasting Inc. and W. Darnold Drilling and Blasting Inc. for 25 years. They retired in 1994, when they moved to Odell. He was a life-time member of the American Legion, Retired Fleet Reserve, and the Odell United Methodist Church. He was a member of Ledyard, Connecticut Planning Commission, was a Connecticut Justice of the Peace in Ledyard, Republican Town Committee, Connecticut Young Republicans, and was president of the Ledyard Highlands Community Association and other community organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Jolene of Odell; three daughters, Wendelynn Gunderson and husband Donald of Beatrice, Janice Wald and husband Karl of Gilbert, Ariz., and Lori McCullough of Ledyard, Conn.; six grandchildren; one sister, Betty Turnbull and husband Dave of Fort Worth, Texas; two nieces and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Opal (Gorrell) Darnold; and one sister, Marilyn Coyle and her husband Bob.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at the Odell Methodist Church in Odell. Inurnment will be at a later date. A memorial has been established to the Odell United Methodist Church. A guest book will be available for signatures at the Fox Funeral Home, 19th and Garfield streets, Beatrice, on Sunday from noon to 9 p.m., and then at the church one hour preceding the services on Monday.
