Amos was born Feb. 24, 1844 to parents Thomas Adkins (b. 1815) and Margaret Riggle (b. @1821). His known siblings include: Mary E. (1839-1901), James F. (1842-1921; Co. K, 38TH IND INF), William H. (b. 1846), John Thomas (1847-1893), Charles (b. 1851), and Samuel (1859-1933). Adkins was 17 years old at the time he enlisted in Co. K with his older brother James in the fall of 1861. His enlistment papers state he was 5'10" tall, had gray eyes, sandy hair, and a fair complexion. Amos was wounded at the Battle of Perryville, KY on Oct. 8, 1862. On Dec. 28, 1863 he became a "veteran volunteer" by reenlisting with 216 other 38TH IND INF original three-year soldiers who had enlisted back in 1861. Adkins mustered out July 15, 1865 - a survivor of all 33 skirmishes and major battles in which the Thirty-eighth Indiana regiment participated.

On May 3, 1866, Amos, a Crawford Co., IN farmer and hardware dealer, married Miss Sarah E. Hutchings (1844-1914). Together they had the following known children: Thomas (b. 1872), Gracie (1877-1962), Emma G. (b. Aug. 1882) and Curtis Amos (b. June 1885). On Jan. 19, 1880 Adkins applied for a federal veteran's pension (app. #334,661; cert. #252,910 - Indiana). A little over 21 years later, on April 26, 1901, the 57-year-old veteran passed away. His widow, Sarah, applied for a pension on May 25, 1901 (app. #742,078; cert. #517,095 - Indiana).
