Photographer. Born in Quebec, Canada, he was one of the most noted portrait photographers of the 19th Century. In 1836, he moved to New York City, worked as an illustrator for Currier and Ives before joining with James Major and starting his own lithography business, Sarony & Major, in 1843. He opened his own studio Sarony and Company in 1853, which specialized in portraits of the most prominent people of the era. Of the thousands of person photos he took, some of best known included Oscar Wilde, General William T. Sherman, Mark Twain, Nikola Tesla, plus actors Joseph Johnson and Sarah Bernhardt. He died in New York City, on November 9, 1896, at the age of 75.
