Gilbert M. Turner Dies at Afton After Long Illness
Gilbert Miller Turner, 83, passed away at his home in Afton, Friday evening, April 24 at 8:20 p.m. of causes incident to age. He had been in poor health for the past two years but never became bedfast.
He was born Nov 26, 1875 in Farmington, Utah the son of Charles Henry and Abigail Miller Turner. He married Lyle Jones April 8, 1903 in Salt Lake City, the marriage later being solemnized in the Logan Temple Logan, Utah.
He received his early education in Farmington, Utah. He came to Star Valley in May 1910, being hired by Patterson and Taylor to herd their cattle up Crow Creek. He later homesteaded in Sage Valley, Idaho and worked there for Hansen Livestock of Ogden, Utah.
After moving to Fairview, Wyo. he was Wyoming State Brand Inspector for five years. For 15 years he herded cattle on Spring Creek for the Smoot-Fairview Cattle Association, retiring in 1945 when he moved to Salt Lake City, where he made his home until July 1957 when he returned to Star Valley because of failing health.
He was an affectionate husband and father, always being proud of his wife and family. He was of a jovial nature, ready to cheer the sad and ever standing ready to help the unfortunate. He loved wholesome recreation and with his wife won many prize waltzes. For many years in Fairview he was a leader in organizing and promoting benefit dances for anyone in need and for the missionaries in the field. He also gathered the men of the community to give freely of their time assisting in the building of many of the homes in Fairview.
He prized friendship and all he met felt the warmth of his personality. He was a member of Fairview's famous Hill Billy Band and always took part in the 24th of July celebrations.
He was a member of the Third Quorum of Elders of the Afton Second Ward.
He is survived by his widow; two sons and five daughters; Mrs O.P. (Lavon) Erickson, Mrs Dean (Erva) Bruce of Afton; Mrs O.E. (Louise) Johnson, Auburn; B. Turner, Mrs R. L. (Hazel) Crook, Hayward, Calif; Duane Turner, Sunol, Calif.; Mrs Dean (Oris) Olson, Castro Valley Calif. one son preceded him in death. One sister Mrs Bry Burningham of Bountiful, Utah and one brother Bert Turner of Kaysville, Utah also survive as well as 31 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the Fairview Ward Chapel Monday, April 27, 1959 under the direction of the Afton Second ward Bishopric. Interment was in the Afton Cemetery.
Out of town visitors attending the funeral services, besides the immediate family, included; Mr and Mrs Bert Turner, Kaysville, Utah; Mr and Mrs Bry Burningham, Bountiful, Utah; Mr and Mrs Jim Maughan, Warren Knight, Mrs Vilate Turner, Mrs Gayle Casperson and Mrs Betsy Erickson, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs Austin Anderson, Pocatello, Idaho; Mrs Darlene Warren and Mr and Mrs Rex Turner, Ogden, Utah and Mr and Mrs A. L. Hale, New Plymouth, Idaho.
