Lowell enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He received photo reconnaissance training in Colorado and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aerial photographer in World War II. After the war, the family moved to Phoenix, AZ, and later to Pompano Beach, FL, and Brighton, MI, where he was living at the time of his death. Lowell was a horse trainer and harness racing driver. He was a great lover of animals and was devoted to his horses and coon hounds. When living in Arizona, he collected tropical fish and birds.
