John L. McGinnis
John L. McGinnis was born in Madison county on November 25,1859, a
son of Jonathan and Rebecca Cason McGinnis. His father was a pioneer
Christian minister, and his mother was a daughter of Thomas Cason, who in
1847 bought the claim which Hirman Hurst, first white man to live Madison
county, had staked out in Crawford township.
When he was 4 years old, Mr. McGinnis moved with his parents to
Adair county, where his active life was spent in farming. He was active in the
Loucks Grove Christian church there, serving as a Sunday school
Superintendent for 27 years.
He was married Feb. 14,1884, to Cora Kirlin, in Adair county. They were
parents of seven children, one dying in infancy.
The wife and mother died in 1939. Since then he had made his home in
Winterset.
Mr. McGinnis was the last surviving member of a family of 12 children.
He leaves four daughters, Mrs. Eva Glasscock, who had made her home
here with her father, Mrs. Ina Stearns of Davenport, Mrs. Lula Lewis and
Mrs. Alda Flood of Winterset; two sons, Raymond McGinnis of Creston and
Floyd McGinnis of Casey; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
