MY GREAT GRANDFATHER -
Monterville Lawrence Murphy "M.L."
Born 7-3-1871 Died 12-27-1969
Well, where to start with Mont… as far as we know he had 13 (or probably more)
children.
Mont, age 21, married his first wife Wilda Curtis, age 19, 9-20-1889 in McDowell
County, by J. G. Nichols, Justice of the Peace. Wilda was born 1-22-1871, died
8-25- 1957. Wilda is buried Old Cherry Springs, Wilda was the sister to Mont's
brother Rucker's wife, Dora.
As far as we know, at this time, Mont and Wilda had 9 children.
1. Maude, born 1891 married Rucker Elliott on 3-17-1907
2. Eva Lee , born 1892 married Charlie Painter
3. Rader, born 1893 married Clarence Gilliam 3-16-1919
4. Lizzie, born 1895 married to a Ledbetter
5. Dot, born 1897 married Willie Conner on 12-23-1917
6. Loula, born 1899
7. Florence, born 1905 married to Johnny Walker
8. Hardy, born 1908, married first to Birdie Painter who died after a buggy accident, 2ND wife was Maude Davis, sister of Claude Davis.
9. Chester? Both Clayton Murphy and Oneda Camp, daughter of Dottie, said they did, and Oneda said he died(not confirmed)
Mont had one son by Virginia Whitesides, born 1897,
10.Ernest Stanley Murphy. Another son with Martha Searcy Elliott, wife of Bynam Elliott,
11.Troy Elliott. An unknown daughter,
12. Jo Anne Searcy, (mother not known, by us at this time),
whom he remembered in his will.
Exer Searcy, born 1-31-1901, was living at the old Sim Murphy house with her sister, Edna Searcy Murphy, wife of Ernest S Murphy (Mont's son). Mont got Exer pregnant and they had twins but they both died.
He got Exer pregnant again, and brought her home to live with his family. Their son, 13. Bert Murphy, was born 1927. Wilda left and
Mont married Exer. We called Exer, "Grandma Aunt Exer". Exer and Mont are both buried at Montford's Cove Baptist Church Cemetery, but not together. He is buried beside his parents who are buried the daughters of Roscoe Logan and Sim Murphy
