College Basketball Coach. Born Sandra Kay Yow, she began her career in 1975, when she was appointed associate athletics director at North Carolina State University. As the women's head basketball coach, she earned 20 NCAA tournament bids, won four Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championships and was the first ACC women's coach to record 700 victories. She also coached the US woman's basketball team to gold medals at the Goodwill World Games in 1986 and to a gold medal at the 1988 Olympic games in Seoul, Korea. In 2000, she was inducted into the Woman's Basketball Hall of Fame and into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2002. Cause of death: cancer.
