Manistee Daily News, 12 Nov. 1896:
Burial of S.W. Thompson
The remains of S.W. Thompson, father of Stacy Thompson of this city, arrived today from Grand Rapids where he passed away Tuesday night at the home of another son Winfield Thompson. The diseased [sic] has been in ill health for some time. He is well known in Manistee County and has many friends who mourn with the afflicted family. The remains were interred at Oak Grove.

Manistee Advocate, 13 Nov. 1896:
Laid to Rest
Thursday noon the remains of the late S.W. Thompson arrived, accompanied by his sons, A.W. and E.G. Thompson from Grand Rapids. They were met at the depot by S.C. Thompson, family and quite a number of people and escorted to the grave. Father Hines conducted the services.
S.W. Thompson came here in 1869; he conducted a lumber business in Grand Traverse Co., and at Green Lake, for 18 years and is well and favorably known by all; he was a man who made friends everywhere. Of late years he had made the Pacific coast his home, but for a while he had been residing with his children in Grand Rapids and Manistee. He was well and able to cast his vote on election day, and it was a great surprise to everyone to hear of his death which resulted from abscess of the lungs superinduced by la grippe.
Six children survive him, five sons and one daughter, Byron Thompson, who is South now but his home is at Grand Rapids, A.W. Thompson Mrs. Lillie M. Johnson, of Grand Rapids, E.G. Thompson, at Leganier, Indiana, John Thompson, of Colorado, and Stacy Thompson, of this city.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved children in this sad hour of affliction.

S.W. Thompson is Dead

S.W. Thompson, father of S.C. Thompson of Parkdale, died at the home of his son, Winfield Thompson of Grand Rapids, at 10:30 Tuesday night. The deceased was 78 years of age and is well known in this vicinity. The remains will arrive here tomorrow and will be interred in Oak Grove cemetery.
Many hearts will be saddened to hear of his death, and the family have our sincere sympathy in their sad hour of bereavement.

(Note: Stacy Webb Thompson's two small daughters, Daisy and Violet, by his second marriage to Clara Emma Bradshaw, were not mentioned. This was no doubt an intentional omission by his grown sons who wrote the obituary.)
