Love married her first husband, Samuel Spencer, around 1776. Samuel was a ship's captain who frequently sailed cargo and passengers between New England and the southeastern states. In October 1779, as reported in the February 22, 1780 edition of the Connecticut Courant, Samuel's brig, "Betsy", "with upwards of 100 souls on board", was headed for Connecticut from Georgia, but was taken by the British frigate, "Guadaloupe", which was commanded by Capt. George Robinson, in which Samuel's "upwards of 100 souls on board" were taken prisoner during one of the Revolutionary War seizures. Samuel credited Capt. Robinson with treating the prisoners kindly and Samuel lived until July 5th, 1786, when he died in Sunbury, GA at the age of 37. Love and Samuel had three children: John (born March 1777); Esther (born October 1780); and Love (born 1782).
