Marie was united in marriage to Frank Benys prior to September of 1863. The name is pronounced "Benish". According to a newspaper story quoting Marie's grandaughter, Annie Benys Pesek Leveque (daughter of Joseph Benys), Marie and Frank brought their children to Texas from Libhost, Czechoslovakia, Europe in 1872. Frank died a few years after coming from Europe. He is said to have died either in Praha, Fayette Co, TX or in the St John Community near Schulenburg, but no records of his death or burial were found at either the St. John's church nor at the Praha church. Frank and Marie were at the time living in the St. John area in Lavaca County, Texas, several miles west of Schulenburg. After Frank's death, Marie had to stuggle for existence for herself and her 6 children on the farm in a log cabin with a dirt floor. Several years later, Marie was united in marriage a second time to John Hanzelka prior to December of 1882. John was a widower with two children of his own. Marie and John had one child together, Charley. Charley was born in Praha, Fayette Co, TX. Later they rented a farm from a man in what is now known as the Midway Community. Not long after that, they purchased a farm about four miles northwest of Yoakum in about 1884. This was their permanent home.
