"EATON, Samuel John Mills, clergyman, born in Fairview, Erie County, Pennsylvania, 15 April 1820. He was graduated at Jefferson in 1845, studied theology in the Western theological seminary, and entered the Presbyterian ministry in 1848. From that year till 1882 he was pastor in Franklin, Pennsylvania He has held the offices of stated clerk of the presbytery of Erie since 1853; permanent clerk of synod of Allegheny from 1859 till 1870; stated clerk of synod of Erie from 1870 till 1881; trustee of Washington and Jefferson since 1879; and director of Western theological seminary since 1880. In 1871 he visited Egypt, Palestine, 0reece, and Turkey. His publications are "Petroleum" (Philadelphia, 1866); "History of the Presbytery of Erie" (New York, 1868); " History of Venango County, Pa." (Franklin, 1876); "Lakeside" (Pittsburgh, 1.880); "Memorial of Cyrus Dickson, D.D." (New York, 1883); " Jerusalem" (1884); " Palestine" (1885); and "Memorial of Robert Lamberton" (Franklin, 1886). The degree of D. D. was conferred upon him by Washington and Jefferson in 1869."

Funeral of Rev. S. J. M. Eaton, D.D. Presbyterian Church elaborately decorated with flowers last Friday, 11:00 a.m. but body had been brought to church a short time before, in order to give all who wished to take a last look an opportunity to do so. Solid cedar coffin... trimmings were of oxidized silver. Chautauqua Class of '82 contributed beautiful floral pillow and a cross and crown on table were gift of Mrs. Dr. B. Gillett. First Presbyterian Church of Oil City, Presbyterian Sunday-school of Franklin, Elders of Church and several persons represented by floral gifts.

Following ministers of Presbytery of Erie present: Rev. R. Craighead and Dr. Jonathan Edwards of Meadville; Rev. J. T. Crumrine of Cochranton; Rev. w. T. Garroway of Utica and Rev. Wm. Grassie of Cambridgeboro. Rev. James Allison, D.D., of Pittsburgh, a classmate and life-long friend, and Rev. J. M. Barnett of Washington, Pa. ... Above with Rev. J. C. Bruce, acted as pall bearers, assisted by Elders P. McGough, James Miller, R. H. Woodburn and C. H. Dale.

On left of pulpit were Rev. J. M. Gallagher, of Jackson Centre, Mercer County, Revs. A. J. Merchant, Euclid B. Rogers, H. J. G. Bartholomew, H. L. Yewens, and L. M. Boyer of Franklin pulpits.

Services solemn, hymns by excellent choir, consisting of Mrs. Kate Stratton, Miss Alice Brandon, Miss Kate Dale, and Messrs. W. G. Trunkey, Robert Bruce and S. D. Mayes. Mrs. E. S. Brandon at organ.

Dr. Allison paid feeling tribute.... Rev. Wm. Grassie, oldest member of Presbytery, depicted salient points of Dr. Eaton's character. Rev. J. C. Bruce referred to prominent part taken in Chautauqua work then introduced Prof. W. D. Bridge, private secretary of Bishop Vincent, Chancellor of Chautauqua University. Came at special request of Bishop Vincent who was unable to attend. Resolutions adopted by Chautauqua Class of '82.... Remains to Franklin Cemetery....
