John Ewing was a son of William Ewing (1798-1867) and Elizabeth "Eliza" McWilliams (1815-1886). He married Sarah Ann Carpenter about 1860, probably in or near Richland Co., WI.

He enlisted Jan. 25, 1865, as a Private in Company H, 46th WI Infantry Regiment; mustered out at Nashville, TN, Sept. 27, 1865.

He moved from Richland Co., WI, to Greene Co., IA, in the 1870s where he was enumerated in the 1880 census for Greenbrier Twp.
