Ralph Kay Fairbanks, 84, a desert pioneer and resident of the Barstow area for 54 years, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 at home with his daughters. He was born on May 23, 1920 in Annabelle, Utah, the son of David Kay Fairbanks and the grandson of Ralph Jacobus ‘Dad' Fairbanks. He spent his younger years living in Shoshone and Baker. Ralph, a retiree for several years, enjoyed his home and his extended family. His special joys were cooking holiday dinners for large groups of relatives, and boating and camping on Lake Mojave with family and friends. He graduated from Barstow High School in 1938 when the school was located on Main Street where the El Rancho is today. He was a veteran of World War II, having joined the United States Army on Dec. 8, 1941. He spent four years in Alaska where he became the youngest Master Regimental Supply Sergeant in the Army. From there he was sent to Italy where he spent one year in charge of four R&R hotels. Ralph was a long-time member of the Eagles, VFW, American Legion, and AmVets. He was preceded in death by Lucy Haimut Fairbanks, his wife of 35 years. Survivors include his daughters, Nora Moran and Paul Fairbanks of Barstow; grandson, Jason Mansfield of Barstow; great-granddaughter, Ashley of Barstow; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who will miss him. Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park.
