She was the daughter of Noah and Naomi Riggs Hayes. She worked as a machinist during World War II. She later worked as city treasurer for the city of Kiowa for 14 years. She was active at First Baptist Church in Kiowa where she taught Sunday school for 40 years, sang in the choir and helped with vacation Bible school. She married Herbert Cox on June 3, 1944, at Liberal, Kan. Air Force Base. They were married for 64 years. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Survivors include her husband, Herbert Cox, of Kiowa; children, Robert Cox, of Smithton, Mo., June Cox, of Irene, S.D., Dennis Cox, of Kiowa; six grandchildren and spouses, Landon Ludens, Jason Ludens, Justin Ludens, Bobby Cox, Danny Cox and MaryLynn Cox. And, seven great-grandchildren, Levi Ludens, Gerit Ludens, Austin Ludens, Carrie Cox, Benton Ludens, Gavin Ludens and Asher Cox, and one sister, Betty Brown, of Los Angeles. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Sharon (Cox) Ludens; two sisters, Rebbeca Bruce, Lorene Hayes, and one brother, Joseph Hayes. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 at First Baptist Church, Kiowa, with the Rev. Don Russell and Pastor Dennis Pearcy officiating. Burial will be at Kiowa Cemetery under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
