"one of the first settlers of the town"
He was a Revolutionary soldier and was Lieutenant in the company that went from this town to the battle of Bennington. He lived on Town hill, and the farm he owned is now in the possession of his grandson, William B. Ellis; was the ancestor of the Ellis family in Claremont.

[Barnabas Ellis, who was a prominent resident of Hebron, Connecticut, in 1767, but removed to Claremont, New Hampshire, where he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Spencer, in 1769, this being the first marriage solemnized in that town. Barnabas Ellis served in the capacity of lieutenant in the Continental army, was one of the members of the expedition under the command of Ethan Allen against Ticonderoga and Crown Point, in 1775, and served as a lieutenant under the command of General Stark in the battle of Bennington, Vermont, August 16, 1777. His son, Barnabas Ellis, married Belinda Kidder, of Weathersfield, Vermont, a daughter of Lieutenant Oliver Kidder. Barnabas Ellis was chosen three times to serve as a member of the Vermont legislature.

BARNABAS ELLIS

Was one of the first settlers of the town. He came from Hebron, Conn., in the early spring of 1767. Josiah Willard, one of the grantees of the town, conveyed to Mr. Ellis one of the seventy-five proprietors' shares of land, located on Town hill, the deed being dated May 29, 1767. He lived there until his death, June 26, 1838, at the age of ninety-three years. He was succeeded by his youngest sou, William, who was born, always lived, and died on that farm, August 29, 1880, since which it has been owned by his son, William Barnabas. Thus it will be seen that this farm has been owned by three generations of Ellises, father, son, and grandson, one hundred and twenty-seven years — all hon ored and respected citizens. In 1769 Barnabas Ellis and Elizabeth Spencer were married, this being the first wedding in town. MrEllis was a lieutenant in the Continental army, was with Ethan Allen's expedition against Ticonderoga and Crown Point in 1775, and ser%red as a lieutenant under Gen. Stark, in the battle of Bennington, August 16, 1777. He was one of the selectmen in 1796 and 1797, and held other minor offices in town.
