Daughter of Horace Allen Amsberry of Mason County, West Virginia and Mary Jane Blaine of Virginia.

Wife of Elmer Lewis Slay of Warners Landing, Wisconsin; married on 29 November 1899 in Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa.

"Mary Elizabeth Amsberry was born March 19, 1880 on the family farm near Knoxville, Iowa. She was the daughter of H.A. and Mary Amsberry. She grew to womanhood in that community, attended public school at the Sempter school and spent one year in Central college at Pella.
She was united in marriage November 29, 1899, to Elmer Lewis Slay and to this home nine children were born.
Mr. and Mrs. Slay lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary, and this occasion was celebrated in their home with all of the children attending.
Mr. and Mrs. Slay started housekeeping near Bellfountain, later moving to Lakonta (now Truax), where they resided for about 20 years. After this, they lived in Hamilton and Lovilia and about eight years ago moved to Oskaloosa.
Mrs. Slay was very much devoted to her home and family and believed that God had entrusted her with the stewardship of life and loved ones and gave a good account of her trust. She was converted when about 14 years of age in the Asbury Methodist church on the Durham Circuit and was baptized by the Rev. W.S. Moore in the Des Moines river.
Mrs. Slay was preceded in death in April of this year by her husband, E.L. Slay.
She is survived by her children, Caroline Hoit, Paul, LeRoy and Joe of Oskaloosa; Mary Wells and Harold of Lovilia; Thelma Krile of Spencer, and Kenneth of Long Beach, Calif; 25 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers; one sister, many other relatives and a large circle of friends."
