Elizabeth Jane Stiles was born in either Pleasant Valley or Racine Township in Mower County, southeastern Minnesota, the oldest of at least 7 children born to the farmer Charles Columbus Stiles and Mary Jane Ferrie. Elizabeth "Lizzie" grew to adulthood in the Racine/Hamilton, Minnesota area and married Edgar Marshall Farnsworth in Hamilton on November 28, 1900. It was in Hamilton where her eldest son Bertrude Marshall Farnsworth was born in August 1901.

In 1902 Elizabeth and Edgar Farnsworth moved, along with Edgar's parents and younger brothers, to Edgeley, LaMoure County, North Dakota where Edgar set up a blacksmith and welding shop, an occupation he pursued until retiring in 1949.

Elizabeth Farnsworth was a tall, strong-willed, opinionated, helpful, and energetic woman, active in the Methodist Church and in the community of Edgeley. She acted as a local midwife and baked cakes for numerous special occasions in Edgeley.

Elizabeth and Edgar raised their children in an busy home in Edgeley. Besides Bertrude, Edgar and Elizabeth Farnsworth had five other children born in Edgeley: Ethel (Salisbury), Alice (Young Meriwether), Isabel (Studebaker Patton Greenwood), Marion (Brown Bradley), and Edgar Stiles Farnsworth.
