Vernon Waddell, 17, of Derwent, Is Victim of Tragic Accident
Vernon Waddell, 17, Derwent, Buffalo high school senior and manager of the school's basketball team, was fatally injured shortly before midnight Wednesday when struck by an automobile just west of Derwent on State Route 313.
Investigating state highway patrolmen said the car which struck the youth was driven by Gilbert L. Bond, Old Washington high school teacher. Waddell and Ross Broom, 16, a member of the Buffalo Team, were walking home at the time.
Patrolmen reported the youths were walking on the right side of the road in the same direction that the Bond car was traveling. The driver was not held. Waddell's death occurred a few minutes after the accident at Little Clinic, Byesville, from a fractured skull. The body was removed to the Herlan funeral home, Byesville.
The youth was an outstanding scholar, was president of the senior class and was highly respected by his class mates. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. "Bid" Waddell and the following brothers and sisters, Kathleen, of the home, Joseph, Rodney, Vera, Orma and Bernice, all of Akron.
