Mrs. Vallie Nancy Griffin Burton, age 94 of Mt. Vernon, went to be with her Lord on Monday, January 19, 2009. She was born in Rockcastle County, KY on January 6, 1915 the daughter of the late Harrison and Martha Rucker Griffin. Mrs. Burton became a Christian in her early teens and was of the Pentecostal faith having been a member of the Mt. Vernon Pentecostal Church but was unable to attend Church for a few years due to her failing health. When she was able, she loved to crochet, garden and her flowers. She also enjoyed Christian radio and Christian programs on television. Mrs. Burton loved her family and friends and she will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Burton is survived by her son: Harris Burton and his wife Wanda of Brindle Ridge; a daughter: Mattie Newton Petrey and her husband Danny Dale of Somerset; one sister: Mary Griffin Roberts of Rutledge, TN; one brother-in-law: Ervin Barron and his wife Fannie of Brodhead. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Stanley Burton and his wife Sherri of Ohio, Kenneth Burton and his wife Brenda of Alabama, Nancy Anglin Hurley of Mt. Vernon and Sheila Burton Zenni and her husband Chafic of Cincinnati, OH; one nephew: Wayne Roberts and his wife Jean of Jefferson City, TN; five step-grandchildren: Samuel D. Newton or Oregon, Mary S. Newton of Somerset, Penny G. Newton of Lexington, Jennifer K. Jones of Bronston and Kristi Rowe and her husband Gary of Eubank; several great grandchildren: Penny Burton, Erik Burton, Travis Burton, Tatiana B. Zenni, John D. Hurley, Amina Zenni and Rebekah Hurley and several step great grandchildren some of which are: Gentry and Kristie Keibler and Deven, Samantha Jones, Zackery Dale and Morgan Rowe and two great great grandchildren. Mrs. Burton is also survived by her extended family: John Chapman of Somerset, Vernon and Shirley Martin of London, who also called her Mom, Junior and Linda Blanton of Mt. Vernon who visited her quite often, Brenda and Jake Brown of Eubank, Esther and James Houston of Cincinnati, Edward and Geneva Houston and Patricia Holland of Mt. Vernon. Mrs. Burton has lots of telephone friends and writing buddies from Ohio to Florida. If we have left anyone out, we apologize. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burton was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George F. Burton, who died May 28, 1990; two children: Bennett L. Burton and Barbara L. Burton Anglin; two son-in-laws: Samuel G. Newton and Bobby Anglin; a daughter-in-law: Shirley Blanton Burton; three brother-in-laws: Troy Roberts, Gravely Burton and Clyde Burton and two sister-in-laws: Clara Smith Burton and Mae Burton Barron.
