Son of Emil Mace a dairy farmer, and Anna Fisher, he was born September 15th 1920 in Lisbon, North Dakota.

 

He spent his youth in Lisbon and on September 5th 1938, at the age of 17, he married Margaret Elizabeth Clow in Britton South Dakota. Together, they had a daughter in 1940.

 

On February 10th 1941 he enlisted in the United States Army and was deployed to the South Pacific. Sadly, he was wounded in action receiving shell fragments in both legs. He was sent back home and after six months rehabilitation he was assigned to Denver Military Police.

 

In October of 1944 he received the presidential unit citation for outstanding gallantry in the Solomon Islands. The ribbon bar with star was pinned by Major General G.H. Danielson, commanding general of the Seventh Service Command.

He was discharged November 8th 1944. And his marriage ended in a divorce.

 

On June 24th 1950, he married Blanche Catherine Breen in Fargo, North Dakota. That marriage would also end in a divorce a couple of years later.

 

Charles died on December 19th 1978 and was interred in Black Hills National Cemetery Sturgis South Dakota at the age of 58.
