"Sheldon G. Kern was born in Suisun Valley and moved with his family when a boy about four years old. He attended common school, then later moved to Delhi where he finished grammar school and attended high school in Turlock. While still young, he started forward to see for himself and endeavored to make his mark in the world. Sheldon worked at odd jobs for awhile, then his brother, Olen, wrote him to come down to Los Angeles and apply for a job with the Los Angeles Railway Company, which he did. He continued to wok for two years, then quit and worked for the Paul Howard Nurery, where he continued through the season. Then he landed a job with the Shell Oil Company. He married Nyla Black, a charming young lady of Turlock, and to them was born two children, Maryland and James. James had a talent for singing when he was only three years old. "
